Tourist Trap by eriban Tourist Trap by eriban
Created in a bygone era, by a people long forgotten, using skills forever lost, the Tower at the World's Corner prominently stands at the corner of the world. Trespassing is allowed, but mind the step. Please make a donation before you enter.

Technical Details and Credits

This image has been rendered using the POVRay raytracer. No post-processing has taken place on the image to make the illusion work; this is the 3D scene as it is rendered by the raytracer.

The grass is made using macros by Gilles Tran. The palm tree is made using the tree macro by Tom Aust, modified by Gena Obukhov. The chain is made using a macro by the PM 2Ring, using catenary calculations by Zdislav Kovarik.

Not just because of my personal interest in POV-Ray but Tourist Trap by ~eriban is a well executed illusion and an original idea. There are lots of impossible cubes and confusing ladders out there, but ~eriban's work is a pretty authentic one. ( Featured by KeremGo )

Yeah, pretty sure. But then again, nothing is impossible, right? So who knows...

Ha, it's totally an M. C. Escher drawing, but 3-D. That's awesome.

The subtle changing in the shading changes the perspective...nice one.

Thanks. But who knows, maybe it is the change in perspective that causes the subtle change in shading?

Thanks. You have made some innovative 3D illusions yourself, so that makes it extra nice to hear.

Hmmm when my eyes start at the bottom of the tile floor and move up slowly, I see the inside of the corner. But somewhere along the inside of the top border, right below the window and the circle design, the point of view changes so I'm now looking at the outside of the building. (if any of that made sense) No matter how hard I try, I can't get my eyes to see the tower as a whole.

I LOVE this. And I can most definitely look at it for hours! =D Great job!!

Thanks!!!

Your explanation definitely makes sense. I am surprised by people that manage to view the tower as a coherent three dimensional object. They must have special powers. Ordinary beings should not be able to make sense of it. At least, I can't...

the lower part is to the inside because of the shadow on the red box, while the upper part is to the outside because of the flower thing and how the shadow is represented.

good work, only a fool wouldn't understand, so good work to test the mind.

It may be a bit subtle for some but if you examine the shadows and lighting carefully, that is indeed the only correct interpretation for the top and bottom part of the tower. That still doesn't explain how it is achieved though. That's a question for bonus points... :-)

No, I would not claim that my mission is to annoy others. I would say instead that I am happily spreading a bit of four-dimensional confusion. :-)
